The role of a nanny at Totters: a childcare and child development professional in your home
A Totters nanny, whom we call your Totter, is a professional in childcare and child development who joins your home to give your child steady, responsive care and early learning, and to give you clear communication and peace of mind. She knows how children grow, she observes your child closely, and she turns each routine into a chance to develop, with a coordination team behind her every day. If you’re an international family living in Mexico, newly arrived, or visiting for a season, this article shows you how your Totter works, how we choose and match her, and what we’ve learned from years of working with families like yours. We’re sharing it openly because choosing the person who spends your child’s days is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make, and you deserve to know exactly how we think. You’ll also find the research behind our approach.
Key takeaways
- Your Totter is a professional in childcare and child development, certified in pediatric first aid and trained on an ongoing basis in child development and safety.
- Responsive interaction between a child and a caregiver is central to early development, according to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University(2025).
- Every Totter passes six filters before we introduce her to you: an in-depth interview, document validation, a criminal background check, a psychometric evaluation, pediatric first aid certification, and continuing training.
- Behind your Totter stands a coordination team: an assigned coordinator, a substitute you approve, written protocols, and a solution when your plans change.
- The decisions stay with you. You meet your Totter first, approve every profile change and every substitute, and can request a new match up to three times at no cost.
- When you meet any caregiver, watch what she does in the first moments after a child struggles, because it shows how she sees your child.
In case you’re new here, we’re Totters Care, and our story starts with our founder, Montserrat Armesto. Montse holds a master’s degree in Neuropsychology and Education and a bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy, and she has dedicated her career to early childhood, working with families across different countries, cultures, and stages of life. Along the way she noticed the same thing again and again: when a family lives abroad, childcare becomes one of the most important and emotionally charged decisions they face.
Her own path shaped how she sees care. Montse grew up in environments where education and care were rigid, adult-centered, and often disconnected from a child’s emotional world, and she came to understand how deeply early experiences shape confidence, emotional safety, and the ability to adapt to change. She founded Totters because every child deserves care that nourishes, holds, and loves.
Today the Totters team carries her vision into homes in Mexico, backed by thirteen years of caring for children. We offer in-home nanny services for international families who want a thoughtful, development-focused standard of care, with emotional steadiness for their children and clear communication and peace of mind for themselves.
What is the role of a nanny?
A nanny is a professional caregiver who looks after your child in your home, manages daily routines, and supports your child’s growth. Day to day, that means helping with dressing and meals, guiding naps, planning age-appropriate play and outings, reading together, and leading the bedtime routine. A nanny keeps the environment safe, supervises according to your child’s age, and updates you regularly on mood, milestones, and activities.
Routines deserve special attention because they act as the structure your child leans on. A predictable sequence of waking, eating, playing, resting, and winding down tells a child what comes next, and that predictability lowers stress for everyone in the home. At Totters we see the role as the work of a professional who understands childhood, and that view is where we start.
Your Totter: a professional in childcare and child development
Every Totter works from one belief: each child is strong, capable, and rich in potential, driven by a natural desire to grow. Curiosity pushes children to question and investigate everything around them, and we take that drive seriously. Your Totter brings calm, presence, and thoughtful structure into your home, and she keeps one aim at the center of every day: that your child feels safe, seen, and capable.
Knowledge: she understands how children develop
Your Totter knows what children typically do at each age, from the first months through the school years, and she keeps learning. She’s certified in pediatric first aid, including CPR and choking response, and she trains on an ongoing basis in child development and safety. That knowledge shows up in small decisions: how she soothes an infant, how she answers a toddler’s fifth “why,” and how she supports a school-age child who is tired after a long day.
The research explains why this matters. The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University describes responsive “serve and return” interactions with caregivers as central to early childhood development, supporting healthy brain architecture and acting as a buffer against the effects of adversity (2025). A serve is anything your child does to reach out: a babble, a gesture, a question. A return is the caregiver noticing and responding. The same Harvard Center page notes that when these relationships are missing, development can be disrupted. Your Totter returns each serve, names what your child is seeing or feeling, and offers a steady base for big feelings. In our experience, children who feel known by one caring adult explore more freely, because they trust that someone will be there when they return.
Observation: she watches before she acts
Your Totter gives your child time. When your child is working toward their own understanding, she leaves a generous pause before offering an answer, because a child who is trusted to think builds knowledge in their own way. You may be surprised by how long we wait. We wait because children make connections to their own world, in their own time. Her observation is also what makes your daily updates specific: what your child explored, what frustrated them, what made them laugh, and which words they used.
Practice: she turns daily life into development
Your Totter designs development activities with what you already have at home, and our early childhood education program turns daily rhythms into learning for children from ages 1 to 8. She shapes the environment to fit your child: sinks, mirrors, shelves, and seats sit at a child’s level wherever your home allows, so your child can wash their hands, see their own reflection, and reach what they need without waiting for an adult. We favor calm, warm, well-kept spaces with real books, real materials, and living plants, and we skip primary colored plastic and cartoonish decor, because we believe children deserve beauty and care.
She also gives your child real autonomy. Children decide when they need help and ask for it, and a good caregiver trusts that signal. They learn by being trusted with real tasks, such as setting out their own cups or choosing which book to read. When your child asks a question or builds something, your Totter shares their own words and creations with you, which shows you what your child is wondering about and shows your child that their ideas are worth keeping.
Totters vs a traditional nanny: what we do differently
A traditional nanny arrangement usually organizes the day around tasks and leaves the search, the checks, and the backup plan to you. Your Totter handles the same tasks, and a full system stands behind her: a profile of your family, six filters, two guarantees, and written protocols. For us, trust is built with verified information.
Family Profile: we get to know you first
Before we choose your Totter, we get to know your family in detail. You fill out an assessment covering routines, sleep, feeding, health and allergies, emergency contacts, who may pick up your child, what calms your child, and what you expect from the service. That information becomes your Family Profile, one document our whole team uses as its reference on every shift.
We then match you with the Totter who fits your child’s age, your language, your parenting style, and the rhythm of your home, and we design your schedules, shifts, activities, materials, and protocols around you. You can see your Family Profile at any time. It changes with your child week by week, and only Totters updates it, always with your approval.
Six filters: how we choose your Totter
Every candidate passes six filters before we present her to you. We begin with an in-depth interview about her background, her motivation, and her judgment in real situations. We validate the authenticity of her documents and review her criminal record before she enters your home. A psychometric evaluation looks at emotional stability, honesty, and skills with children. She holds a pediatric first aid certification, and she keeps training in child development and safety on an ongoing basis.
Pressure and conflict: what an interview can’t show
When everything goes well, almost any candidate is charming. What matters to you is how a caregiver reacts on a hard day: a tantrum that won’t end, an accident, an instruction she disagrees with. For that reason every candidate completes an integrity evaluation, the Veritas evaluation by Adam Milo, that places her in situations of pressure and conflict. It looks at resistance to pressure, mental strength, and emotional response, at how she handles violence, human relationships, and responsibility, at theft, trust, and harassment, and at honesty.
Some areas allow no margin. If a candidate shows any sign of risk around theft, violence, harassment, or trust, she doesn’t reach your home, and if something remains unclear, she doesn’t advance.
Guarantees: meet first, change if you need to
Our Encounter Guarantee means you always meet your Totter on a video call before she starts. If she isn’t the right fit for you, we introduce another profile, up to three presentations, and over the last two years nine out of ten families chose their Totter from the first presentation.
Our Comfort and Safety Guarantee covers the day to day: if you don’t feel at ease, we make a new match, up to three times at no cost. In that same period, eight out of ten families stayed with their first Totter, and we’ve never reached a third change.
Protocols and privacy: ready before anything happens
Thirteen years of caring for children let us write our protocols before they’re needed. They cover choking, falls and injuries, fever or illness, medication, allergic reactions, calling emergency services, going to the hospital, what to do if we can’t reach you, and who may pick up your child. You receive them in writing.
We also know how delicate it is to look after the privacy of your home, your family, and your child. We take no photos and publish nothing about your child without your written authorization, which you can withdraw at any time. Each Totter signs a confidentiality agreement about your address, your routine, and your family, during and after the service, and your data lives in your Family Profile with personal access that can’t be transferred.
The families we work with
Many of the families we work with are international and high-net-worth. Their schedules are demanding, their standards are high, and their time is the one thing they can’t get more of. They value discretion above all, they value a caregiver who truly understands child development, and they value a service that runs so smoothly they rarely have to think about it. Most of all, they value the freedom to decide for their own family without feeling constrained.
If that sounds like your home, this section is for you. Over the years we’ve learned what you expect, and we’ve built Totters around it.
Privacy, standards, and continuity: what you can count on
You’ll probably ask us about discretion first: who enters your home, what our team knows about your family, and what stays private. The filters, the confidentiality agreement, and your personal access to your Family Profile exist to answer that. You’ll also want professionalism from the people around your children, the same trusted face week after week, clear communication, and quick answers when you ask a question.
A team behind your Totter: coordination that solves
You receive an excellent Totter, and you also receive a coordination team behind her. You have an assigned coordinator for your family, a substitute you approve if your Totter can’t come, and written protocols for every situation we described above. When a need comes up, you tell your coordinator and we confirm it according to your Totter’s availability, whether that means extra hours, a holiday when you want coverage, or a team of several Totters for 24/7 care.
We’re also used to moving quickly: we provide more than one hundred occasional services a year for weddings, events, and specific needs, many for families who call us again. Your coordinator handles payments, schedules, and adjustments, and anything that made you uncomfortable comes to us, so your relationship with your Totter stays centered on your child.
Your rhythm, your decisions: freedom without friction
Your week probably changes often: a trip, an event, a new school schedule, a week with more work. Our service is built to bend with you. Your Family Profile changes with your child week by week. You approve every update and every substitute, you meet your Totter before she starts, you authorize or withdraw photos at any time, and you can request a new match up to three times at no cost. The structure is ours to maintain, and the decisions stay with you.
Wherever you are in your life in Mexico
You might have lived in Mexico for years, just landed, or be visiting for a season, and your Totter adapts to where you are. We support infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children: feeding and soothing rhythms for infants, play and language for toddlers and preschoolers, and learning continuity for school-age children.
Every day: what your Totter does and what stays outside
Your Totter follows your child’s routines, prepares simple meals and serves them, washes your child’s dishes when needed, keeps your child’s areas tidy, and does and stores your child’s laundry. General house cleaning and elaborate cooking stay outside the role so that her attention is always on your children.
A nanny shouldn’t leave children unsupervised, use harsh discipline, or share your child’s photos or private information without your permission, and tasks outside the childcare role belong in a separate agreement. We review the duties with you before the first day.
A short stay: one season in Mexico
If you’re coming for one or two months of work, a project, or a long vacation, you probably arrive without grandparents nearby, without the friend who recommends someone, and without time to search. You need childcare you can trust from the first week, and interviewing, trying out, and replacing caregivers can consume a large part of a short trip. Our process is built for that situation.
Staying longer: what renewals tell us
Today in Mexico City we serve fifteen families with continuous service. Seven have been with Totters for a year and a half, nine of the fifteen have already renewed their contract, and two are on their third renewal. One parent wrote to us, “The level of care, attention to detail, and professionalism exceeded all of our expectations. Our children are always happy, and we trust them completely with the team.”
Timing: how soon your Totter can start
When your ideal Totter is already part of our team, a match takes two to four business days. When we select a new Totter especially for your family, it takes up to ten business days, and she passes the same six filters as everyone on our team.
We recommend starting three weeks ahead if you’ll live in a central area, and four to eight weeks ahead if you’ll live somewhere with difficult public transport access, if you want 24/7 care with a team of several Totters, or if you have very specific requirements.
What we look for in a Totters nanny
A great nanny combines warmth, reliability, and genuine respect for your child as a capable person. You may also want comfort with your family’s language and respect for your family’s culture and values. Here’s the judgment call we use, and we’d give it to any parent. Watch what a caregiver does in the first moments after a child struggles with something. A great nanny waits, watches, and offers just enough help for the child to keep going. A caregiver who steps in at once and finishes the task takes away the learning, even with the kindest intentions.
Three observable signs tell us a caregiver is the right fit. The first is presence: her attention stays on the child, with eyes and voice available. The second is safe structure: the day has a rhythm your child can predict. The third is respect for your child’s time: she leaves room for your child to think, answer, and try again.
Who do you want beside your child every day?
Choosing a caregiver for your child carries real weight, especially when you’re still finding your footing in a new country. You’re already managing a lot, and you deserve a caregiver who sees your child clearly and a team that handles everything around her.
Totters Care offers thoughtful, professional childcare at home and an early childhood education program for ages 1 to 8, bringing calm, safety, and emotional support to your family, whether you’re settled in Mexico, just arriving, or visiting for a season. Getting started takes three steps: we schedule a call, you complete your assessment, and we introduce you to your Totter.
